The prostate is a gland found only in males. It makes some of the fluid that is part of semen. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among men in the United States. The prostate cancer begins when cells in the prostate gland start to grow out of control, usually grows very slowly, and finding and treating it before symptoms occur may improve men's health or help them live longer. The 5-year relative survival rate for most people with local or regional prostate cancer is nearly 100%. More than 3.1 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point, are still alive today. For people diagnosed with prostate cancer that has spread to other parts of the body, the 5-year relative survival rate is 32%. In the US during 2023, there are predicted 288,300 new cases of prostate cancer 34,700 deaths. About 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer in their life. Prostate cancer is more common in older and African American men. The average age of getting prostate cancer for men is 66 years.
